UltraPole NXT Active Ingredient Added to the 2018 AWPA BOS for Utility Poles and Crossarms

UltraPoleTMNXT active ingredient is added to the 2018 American Wood Protection Association Book of Standards for utility poles and crossarms

Charlotte, N.C. (August 30, 2018) – The American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) has established minimum retentions for DCOI for use in utility poles and crossarms. The new retentions were recently published in the 2018 AWPA Book of Standards (BOS).

DCOI has been standardized by AWPA as a wood preservative since 1989. It is the active ingredient in UltraPole NXT treated poles and crossarms and one of the key preservative components in Ecolife® treated decking and fencing, the leading non-metallic preservative currently on the market.

“This environmentally-advanced alternative for utility pole treatment has many advantages over traditional oil-borne pole and crossarm treatments”, states Dr. Kevin Archer, Director of Research and Development for Viance. “The UltraPole NXT formulation is an environmentally-advanced and thoroughly tested preservation system. UltraPoleNXT offers electric utilities a high performance, durable pole with minimal environmental impact.

The product is currently standardized for southern yellow pine poles, southern yellow pine crossarms and Douglas fir crossarms. New proposals were presented to the AWPA technical committees this fall to establish retentions for red pine and Douglas fir poles in the AWPA BOS.

DCOI earned the EPA’s Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award in 1996 as an alternative to tributyltin (TBT) for use in marine antifoulant formulations, which can be harmful to micro flora and fauna in aquatic environments.

UltraPole NXT uses less energy, fossil fuels and water to produce, with lower eco-toxicity than other materials used for poles. UltraPole NXT capitalizes on both the physical and environmental strengths of wood poles, with less impact on the environment.

UltraPole NXT treated poles are backed by a 50-year warranty against termites and decay and offer the industry’s only warranty for an oil-borne preservative.
